Smash Tacos Recipe

Taco seasoned beef is smashed directly onto corn tortillas and cooked 'til crisp-edged on a screaming hot griddle in this smash tacos recipe. Top with all your favourite taco toppings for a taco night that is next level with this marriage of smash burgers and tacos!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 9 corn tortillas or street taco sized flour tortillas
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • olive oil for brushing or olive oil spray
  • 1 1/4 cups crumbled cotija cheese grated Mexican style cheese

Optional but tasty

  • shredded lettuce
  • minced cilantro
  • sliced tomatoes
  • diced mangoes
  • sour cream
  • pickled onions
  • hot sauce
  • refried beans

Instructions
 

  • Preheat a griddle or large, heavy frying pan over high heat.
  • Divide the pound of beef into 9 equally sized pieces. Press each piece onto a tortilla, doing your best to get the beef as close to the edges as possible.
  • Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of taco seasoning over the beef on each tortilla. (SEE NOTES) Working in batches, flip the tortillas meat side down on the hot griddle and press down with a spatula.
  • Fry for about 3 minutes, or until the beef is well browned with some caramelized bits. Drizzle or brush the tortilla lightly with olive oil.
    Slide the spatula under the beef and flip the tortilla over. Fry for another 2 minutes, or until the tortilla has some browned, lacy bits. Transfer to a sheet pan or plate. Sprinkle with crumbled cotija or grated Mexican cheese and top as desired.

Notes

If you prefer milder, less bold tacos, you can reduce this to 1/2 teaspoon of taco seasoning per smash taco. It's up to you!
